Trivia # 97: bleach

30 December, 2009
Toxicological Trivia from December 30, 2009: The sodium hypochlorite solutions are transparent, greenish-yellow color and smell of chlorine. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in the usual commercial preparations acts as a weak irritant (irritation of mucous membranes and / or vomiting if ingested orally over a drink). The lower the concentration, ie the more diluted in water is less able to produce toxic effects. The concentration directed towards the toxicity of a product but you have to relate the dose (a drink, a cup, a quart?). That concentration is common in commercial preparations in Argentina:
a) 3 to 6%;
b) 7 to 10%;
c) More than 10%.
