30 September, 2015
Toxicological trivia from September 30, 2015: The Phasmatodea (sometimes called Phasmida or Phasmatoptera) are an order of insects, whose members are variously known as stick insects (in Europe and Australasia), stick-bugs or walking sticks (in the United States and Canada), phasmids, ghost insects and leaf insects (generally the family Phylliidae). Their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot. Phasmatodea can be found all over the world in warmer zones, especially the tropics and subtropics (Read more in WP). An article from Sertox, had a story of a stick insect, related to:a) A microbe in the digestive system of a stick insect may inspire researchers in their endeavor to develop new drugs against antibiotic resistant superbugs;b) A toxin secreted to defend against predators that would be useful as antibiotic;c) Both previous assertions are correct.
