Toxicological Trivia from April 26, 2010: Oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) is the most important antiviral drug available and a cornerstone in the defence against a future influenza pandemic. Recent publications have shown that the active metabolite, oseltamivir carboxylate (OC), is not degraded in sewage treatment plants and is also persistent in aquatic environments, where ducks and other waterfowl can ingest it. If the birds are infected with influenza virus, it can develop drug resistance. The number one flu medicine is polluting the river downstream from treatment plants, waste water, the researchers confirmed in Japan. The source is: 1) urinary excretion of persons taking oseltamivir; 2) The waste from the factories that produce the drug; 3) None of the above statements is correct.
