The bark contains a bitter heteroside (coutareosido) which showed hypoglycemic action in rabbits. Its popular use is as an adjunct in the treatment of diebetes mellitus type II. It is a native shrub from: a) Mexico and Colombia; b) Venezuela and Panama; c) Peru and Bolivia.
