Toxicological Trivia from January 19, 2010: Konzo (locally known as mantakassa in northern Mozambique) is an epidemic paralytic disease. Outbreaks are associated with several weeks of almost exclusive consumption of insufficiently processed bitter cassava. Often, women and children appear to be most affected, outbreaks usually occur in remote rural areas of eastern and central Africa. "Konzo" can be translated as "legs tied." Improperly processed cassava contains a lot: a) Cyanide; b) Saponins; c) Arsenic.
