July 15, 2008.With food riots breaking out across the globe and the price of food rising to new highs, researchers everywhere are engaging themselves in the search for the discovery that will jump-start the next Green Revolution. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden have taken one giant step towards achieving this goal thanks to their discovery of a protein that has the potential to grow safe-to-eat rice in areas previously considered too toxic.Arsenic is a very toxic and carcinogenic element which occurs naturally in rock. According to UNESCO, over 20 million people may be exposed to chronic arsenic exposure in developing areas such as Bangladesh, parts of India and regions in Nepal.
