Abstract
Effect of ozone/oxygen mixture in the tisular redox state in a subchronic toxicity study in rabbits
It was evaluated the redox balance in hepatic and lung tissues of adult young female rabbits Cenp: NZW, used in ozone subchronic toxicity study. In the study were used 10 animals by group conforming four groups, a control with oxygen and three groups with different doses of ozone/oxygen mixture administered by rectal insuflation during 90 days. There was not significant difference in the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances between all the groups tested. The activity of myeloperoxidase had a significant increase in the half dose group (1400). There was not significant difference in the activity of total superoxide dismutase in the all groups. However the activity of cytosolic superoxide dismutase had a significant decrease in the half and high doses groups as where as the activity of mithocondrial superoxide dismutase was significant increased in the half dose group. The activity of catalase was significant increased at the high dose group. Our results demonstrated that ozone oxygen mixture administered did not affect the redox balance in these tissues during 90 days.
Key words: oxidative stress, ozone oxygen mixture, antioxidants, rectal insuflation.
