Probiotics increase mortality in patients with severe pancreatitis. Thelancet, com. Feb.14,2008.Probiotics—’good’ bacteria—are associated with increased mortality in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and don’t reduce the risk of infectious complications, according to an Article. Researchers did a randomised double-blind, placebo controlled trial of 296 patients with SAP-152 patients received a multispecies probiotic preparation and 144 were given placebo. Similar proportions in each group developed infectious complications, but both groups returned similar results. 24 patients (16%) in the probiotics group died compared to 9 in the placebo group (6%). The authors conclude probiotic prophylaxis should not be administered in this category of patients. (Image from Thelancet article).
