One-Pill Deadly Ingestions in Children: Slideshow. Children present a poisoning prevention challenge. Clinicians must be familiar with agents and substances that at the least warrant hospital admission, even from a small exposure. Read first slide (total slides 19): The 60 poison control centers (PCCs) that made up the US Poison Control and Prevention system in 2009 received over 4.28 million calls. Of these, nearly 2.48 million calls were inquiries related to management of exposures and ingestions in humans. Other calls involved inquiries related to animal exposures and queries for drug information such as drug-drug interactions, environmental information, and drug identification. More than half of human exposure calls (1.29 million; 52%) were related to children 5 years of age or younger. The hotline for the US Poison Control and Prevention system is 1-800-222-1222.
