Gum Disease: Gum disease does not always show symptoms in the early stages. When it progresses it can lead to serious problems including tooth loss. Symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums, red or swollen gums, tender or sore gums, bad taste in mouth and metallic taste in mouth.

Lead Poisoning:

Copper Toxicity: Copper toxicity can be caused by ingesting copper, usually leached into foods and beverages from containers, by adrenal insufficiency, or by an inherited condition called Wilson’s disease. In addition to a metallic taste in the mouth, symptoms of copper toxicity include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The first symptom of Wilson’s disease is often hepatitis.

Mercury Poisoning:
There are many ways in which you can be exposed to mercury. Seafood is a common source. Herbs that are prepared in countries outside the U.S. can be contaminated with mercury. Silver amalgam fillings contain mercury. Thimerosal, used to preserve vaccines, also contains mercury. Metallic Taste in Mouth is a Side Effect Associated With:

Biaxin: Biaxin (clarithromycin) is an antibiotic used to treat skin and respiratory infections and ulcers. Side effects of Biaxin can include metallic or abnormal taste in mouth, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, and stomach discomfort.

Flagyl:
Flagyl (metronidazole) works against anaerobic bacteria and some parasites. It is used to treat infections of the skin, stomach, vagina (not yeast infections), respiratory tract, and joints. Side effects include a metallic taste in the mouth, appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness.

Capoten:
Capoten (captopril) is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It is also used to treat kidney problems that are a complication of diabetes. Side effects of Capoten can include a metallic or salty taste in mouth, decreased taste, mouth sores, bruising, fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.

Lithium
: Lithium is used to treat manic episodes in bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. Lithium side effects include metallic taste in mouth, increased thirst, frequent urination, nausea, and hand trembling.
